Corpus and Politics

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Nilgun has put us in touch with the following highly fertile field for analysis - corpus and concordancing as applied to political discourse. The Cyprus problem awaits a corpus and analysis methinks…

Political Analysis has recently published its annual special issue, this time covering the hot topic Statistical Analysis of Political Text. The issue, guest edited by Burt L. Monroe and Philip A. Schrodt, includes the following articles:
Understanding Wordscores
Will Lowe
Fightin’ Words: Lexical Feature Selection and Evaluation for Identifying the Content of Political Conflict
Burt L. Monroe, Michael P. Colaresi, and Kevin M. Quinn
Lexical Cohesion Analysis of Political Speech
Beata Beigman Klebanov, Daniel Diermeier, and Eyal Beigman
For more information on the special issue, including a list of all articles, visit
http://www.oxfordjournals.org/our_journals/polana/specialissue2008. Read the abstracts for free and purchase the special issue for only £17.00 / $25.00 / €25.00.

A salutory reminder from Time that being big in Web 2.0 does not always make for business viability…

It makes one wonder how long such free upload services can last… The days of pay-for-use may not be too far away…

Introducing Web 2.0

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

There are quite a number of nice introductions to Web 2.0 out there. Here’s one of them: http://www.slideshare.net/robert.kovi/web-20-537943

Note, that this presentation is uploaded on another very rich slidesharing site – www.slideshare.net. Like AuthorStream, it’s packed full of goodies for both teachers and students as well as being a home for your own students’ presentations. (I now regularly get my students to open accounts in these sites, upload presentations, and then get them to post the link in MOODLE or through e-mail – so much more economical than messing around with attachments, as well as opening up their eyes to another Web 2.0 aspect.

There’s a link to Slideshare also from http://www.freetech4teachers.com/. Although not designed for E2L, there’s plenty going on there that should keep you going. A good site for a TD task:

Select three pages, resources or activities for use with your students. Describe what you chose, why, and how you would use them…
